Endangered salamander mussel rediscovered in Illinois

After nearly 120 years without a confirmed record, INHS researchers Mark Davis and Sarah Douglass documented live salamander mussels in the Sangamon River using a combination of eDNA screening and traditional surveys. Historical data from the INHS Mollusk Collection were critical for understanding the species’ former distribution and guiding modern survey efforts. The rediscovery provides rare, valuable insight into the species’ status and informs future conservation planning.
