Bruguiére, 1792

Original Description: Anodontites crispata Bruguière, J.G. 1792. Sur une nouvelle coquille du genre de l’Anodontite (Anodonta crispata). Journal d’Histoire Naturelle Vol. 1:131-136 + 1 plate.
Type Locality: “les riviéres de la Guyanne”.
Holotype: Apparently lost. Topotype. USNM 86403.
Synonymy:
- Anodontites crispata Bruguiére, 1792
- Bruguière 1792:131, pl. 8, figs. 6, 7; 1798:203, figs. 3a, 3b; Marshall 1930:128; 1931:1.
Anodonta crispata (Bruguiére, 1792)
- Lamarck 1819:86.
Anodon schombergianusSowerby, 1870
- Sowerby 1870:17, pl. 34, fig. 137. Type locality: British Guiana.
Description: “Shell elongate-ovate, rather compressed and thin. Anterior end narrower, rather abruptly rounded, obliquely fading into the ventral margin. Posterior end broader, obliquely truncate above to a rib on the posterior dorsal area, then rounding into the ventral margin without angle. A shallow depression across the disk from beak near the middle of the ventral margin. Ventral margin nearly straight, very faintly incurved at its middle portion and slightly gaping in that region. Posterior dorsal ridge rounded; above it a rather strong rib running across the dorsal area from the beak to the posterior margin. etc. ” (Marshall 1931:11).
Range: Probably restricted to the Essequibo River drainage in Venezuela and Guyana. Further collecting along the northeastern coastal drainages in the Guianas should help clarify its range.
Comments: Bruguiére described the first genus and third species of South American naiad when he described Anodontites crispata in 1792. The type specimen of A. crispatais apparently lost (Marshall 1931:10), but a specimen was located in the Paris Museum collected in Cayenne?, from the voyage of Capt. Baudin around 1801. This specimen was the one described by Lamarck (page 86, figure 3a-b of plate 203) in the Encyclopédie Méthodique. This obviously cannot be the type of Bruguiére because the original description predated the Baudin Expedition by eight years.
