Anodontites tortilis

Anodontites tortilis
USNM 86404. Yuruari River, Venezuela.

Original Description: Undescribed [?]

Type Locality:

Holotype:

Synonymy:

  • Anodontites crispatus Bruguiére, 1792
  • Marshall 1925:9, pl. 1, fig. 1.

Description: Undescribed.

Range: Probably restricted to the Essequibo River drainage in Venezuela and Guiana. Further collecting along the northeastern coastal drainages in the Guianas should help clarify its range.

Comments: Marshall (1931:11) stated that the specimen of A. crisptata he figured in 1925 (Plate 1, fig. 1, USNM 24020) was not A. crispata but A. luteola Lea, 1858, (the type locality of which is the Isthmus of Panama, Holotype = USNM 86766). Comparison of the type of A. luteola with USNM 24020 from Venezuela suggests that they are two different species and that USNM 24020 is probably an undescribed species that groups with A. columbiensis Marshall, 1922, A. napoensis (Lea, 1868) A. tortilis (Lea, 1852) andA. luteola (Lea, 1858).
